***Check out my Interview with Kate HERE***
Well, let me just say that Kate Milford's The Boneshaker is one of the books that made that quote resonate with me. I just can't put into words how much I love this book. (I tried here.) I have already pushed The Boneshaker on every child I know who is even remotely in its target audience, and quite a few adults as well, because it is just that good. The Broken Lands, a sort of prequel set in the same world as The Boneshaker but with new characters, will be released this September. (For those of you who have read The Boneshaker, it gives the back-story for drifter Jack! I really can't wait!)
However, while we're waiting for September to come, Kate has something awesome planned. She is self-publishing a novella entitled The Kairos Mechanism to be release at the launch party for The Broken Lands. In her words:
The idea is that, since the two books are related but Natalie's not in the new one, the novella will be a self-contained Natalie adventure that also helps to make clear the connections between the books.
I would love to read that, wouldn't you? In order for this to happen, Kate needs some help. She launched a Kickstarter Campaign yesterday with a goal of $6500 that must be met in 60 days, that is June 9. If we meet this goal, The Kairos Mechanism will be available in three different formats:
- A paperback edition using McNally Jackson Books’s self-publishing services and Espresso Book Machine. As with The Boneshaker and The Broken Lands, it will have a brand-new cover illustration by Andrea Offermann, and will be designed by Lisa Amowitz.
- A digital edition through Google Play.
- A very special digital edition illustrated by tween and teen reader artists, each having been given a chapter for which to create an illustration of their choice in the style of their choice. This edition will be available at Kate Milford's site, The Clockwork Foundry, pay-what-you-like.
All you have to pledge to help this project along is $1. However, if you want to contribute more, there are TONS of really awesome pledge packages. Another cool thing? If this works out, The Arcana Project may become a reoccurring project! Again, in Kate's words:
The basic idea is this: self-publish a novella to accompany each of my traditionally-published hardcover releases. The companion novella might or might not be about characters from the specific book it’s released with, but it will always be related to it.
I am so excited about this! The only question I have now is this: "How much can I talk my husband into contributing?" If you haven't checked out the Kickstarter Page yet, you should! Just click the image below:
A NOTE: I am not receiving any sort of compensation for promoting this campaign. (Aside from whatever prizes go with the pledge package I chose, of course!) I just love Kate Milford's writing that much, and really, really want to read this myself.
